Panic Attacks and Public Speaking

May 19th, 2009

It is often observed that many people’s top ranking fear is not death but having to speak in public. The joke is that these people would rather be lying in the casket at the funeral than giving the eulogy. Public speaking for people who suffer from panic attacks or general anxiety often becomes a major source of worry weeks or even months before the speaking event is to occur.

These speaking engagements do not necessarily have to be the traditional “on a podium” events but can be as simple as an office meeting where the individual is expected to express an opinion or give verbal feedback. The fear of public speaking and panic attacks in this case centers on having an attack while speaking. The individual fears being incapacitated by the anxiety and hence unable to complete what he or she is saying. The person imagines fleeing the spotlight and having to make all kinds of excuses later for their undignified departure out the office window….

This differs slightly from the majority of people who fear public speaking because their fear tends to revolve around going blank while speaking or feeling uncomfortable under the spotlight of their peers. The jitters or nerves of speaking in public are of course a problem for this group as well, but they are unfamiliar with that debilitating threat which is the panic attack, as they most likely have not experienced one before.

So how should a person with an anxiety issue tackle public speaking?

Humor And Jokes

January 8th, 2009

You can and should use a little humor and the occasional joke to lighten things for the audience but there are some tired old jokes best avoided:

“This is the second time today that I have risen from a warm seat with a piece of paper in my hands… let’s hope I don’t make as much of a mess this time”

Or the equally excruciating:

“I can see that you think I’m an expert, but let me tell you the definition of EXPERT.

X is an unknown quantity and Spurt is a drip forced out under pressure…

So here I am.”

Try to avoid humor and jokes like that and you’ll be off to a great speech.

Unintentional Humor

“I want to make sure everybody who has a job wants a job”
–George Bush, during his first Presidential campaign

“I want you to take your balls in your hand and bounce them on the floor and
then throw them as high as you can. Now, have you all got your balls in your
hands?”

–announcer of children’s radio show “Life With Mother” to her audience

Rehearsal When Speaking in Public

January 6th, 2009

Prepare Your Speech Well

Prepare Your Speech Well

The importance of rehearsal when speaking in public cannot be over-emphasized. It prepares you for the event and allows you to ‘edit’ your speech in real-time and get used to hearing your own voice. Preparation by rehearsal gives your presentation real substance and it won’t just fade away like a summer cloud.

One of the ways to conquer your public speaking fear is to face up to it. If you have a fear of speaking in public, as most people do, the best way to overcome it is by actually standing up in public and giving out a speech.

Your nerves might attack you at the last minute but if you come prepared, with your speech carefully rehearsed, you will surely be able to conquer your fear and face up to the task of delivering your speech.

The key to being prepared to deliver a public speech is by having at least one rehearsal. Here are my tips on how you can use the ‘rehearsal’ technique to your advantage when you are involved in speaking in public:

Make Wedding Speeches Easy

January 5th, 2009

Afetr The Wedding Speeches

After The Wedding Speeches

Giving a wedding toast is a responsibility that puts fear into the hearts of most members of a wedding party who know they have to give a speech. While it’s not usually something that is particularly long or involved, it is public speaking (which doesn’t sit well with many people) and really puts people on the spot.

If you are planning a wedding and know that most members won’t mind the whole “public speaking” thing, then by all means keep the toasts traditional with the ‘Father of the Bride’, the best man and others taking their expected turns at the microphone.

But if you’re looking for something different, either because you want to save putting people on the spot, or you simply want to do something different and fun, read on.

High Impact Speeches

January 2nd, 2009

It is the ambition of most public speakers to create speeches that really MOVE the audience.

High Impact Speeches: How to Write and Deliver Words That Move Minds

Public speaking is an essential skill in business and, I suppose in every other walk of life. At some stage in your career you will find yourself having to promote your company, your product, your idea, yourself, to a live audience with nothing to rely on but the power of your words.

Extract from Book Review on Amazon: “I used to hate public speaking. Not any more. A brilliant book has turned a chore into a pleasure. Richard Heller’s High Impact Speeches told me, very simply but very entertainingly, everything anyone needs to know about how to compose and deliver a public speech – how to connect with the audience, how to arrange words and thoughts, how to rehearse, how to beat stagefright (check out the brilliant idea of writing your own press release about the enraptured audience). And his ideas work – they deliver results….

Imaging In Speech Preparation

December 31st, 2008

The Power Of Images

The Power Of Images

(1) Set the image of your audience before you while you prepare.

Disappointment may lurk here, and you cannot be forearmed for every emergency, but in the main you must meet your audience before you actually do – image its probable mood and attitude toward the occasion, the theme, and the speaker.

(2) Conceive your speech as a whole while you are preparing its parts.

Otherwise you will not see – image – how its parts shall be comfortably framed together.

(3) Image the language you will use.

So far as written or extemporaneous speech may dictate. The habit of imaging will give you choice of varied figures of speech, for remember that an address without fresh comparisons is like a garden without blooms.

Do not be content with the first hackneyed figure that comes flowing to your pen-point, but dream on until the striking, the unusual, yet the vividly real comparison points your thought like steel does the arrow-tip.

Public Speaking Training

The Art Of Public Speaking

The Art Of Public Speaking

Training in public speaking is not a matter of externals – primarily; it is not a matter of imitation – fundamentally; it is not a matter of conformity to standards – at all.

Public speaking is public utterance, public issuance, of the man himself; therefore the first thing both in time and in importance is that the man should be and think and feel things that are worthy of being given forth.

Unless there be something of value within, no tricks of training can ever make of the talker anything more than a machine – albeit a highly perfected machine – for the delivery of other men’s goods. So self-development is fundamental in our plan.

The Art of Public Speaking e-Book which accompanies this site is 226 pages of practical training for mastery of the art. Its also a very good read and gives you loads of exercises to do plus all the tools and confidence you need to master public speaking for profit and pleasure.

Persuasive Public Speaking – How to Persuade Your Audience Through Public Speaking

Want to enhance your persuasive public speaking skills? Perhaps you have already spoken before an audience, have given a great speech, have influenced them considerably to your point and have received a standing ovation a few times. Now you wish to improve that foundation you have in persuasive public speaking.

Here are three ways that can help you to become a more influential speaker.

One, body language. Majority of human communication is done nonverbally, and people commonly respond and understand it very well, having said that we primarily did not have formal education on nonverbal language. In order to effectively connect with your audience, mean what you’re saying through nonverbal cues.

These include eye contact, hand gestures, pacing and the like to stress your words and statements. For instance, if you’re trying to imply a very important point, you may point a finger up. If you’re telling a story, pace a short distance citing you’re bringing them to a certain point. You would be surprised what difference as an audience it would make if the speaker simply went through his speech purely verbal.
